High Concept - Overview and vision statement:
TreeTop=NewWeb is a 3-dimensional board game for elementary school age children and their families designed to create cautious appreciation for spiders. While their spider game pieces climb a series of ramps heading up a tree, children will learn about different species of spiders, distinguish between myths & truths about spiders, become familiar with safety around spiders, act out special spider abilities, and even build their own spider web.
Need for the game:
Many people are afraid of spiders, and children who might initially be interested in spiders are taught to be afraid and the kill them thoughtlessly if they are found in a house or even outdoors. However, spiders are an integral part of our ecosystems and are needed to keep the insect population in check, to provide food for many other animals, and offer an engineering marvel in their web production, one not yet matched by humans in terms of strength and flexibility.
Serious Goals:
This game will familiarize children with different species of spiders and teach them that it's reasonable to be cautious, but not afraid, teaching about which spiders do pose real dangers, as well as the benefits spiders provide to us and our world.
Target Audience:
The game is designed for elementary school children and families.
Succinct Gameplay Summary:
Players spin a web-spinner to determine how many spaces their game piece spider climbs up the tree ramps. Each space they land on lists the name of an action card to draw and perform: Myths or Truths, Fast Facts, Charades, and Matching. By performing the action card task, they earn webstix with which they will build a spider web when they reach the top of the tree. The winner reaches the treetop first AND builds a recognizable spider web. Visit Play The Game Page for a Complete Slideshow & Instructions!
